Remembrance – Corporal J.R. Spears, USMC

Pensacola, Fla. – The Cpl. J.R. Spears Detachment of the Marine Corps League and

Chapter 566 of the Military Order of the Purple Heart announce a somber day of

remembrance and reflection for Corporal J. R. Spears, USMC, our detachment

namesake, who laid down his life in service to our country.

Guest Speaker - Colonel Christopher “Caveman” Holzworth, USMC, Ret.

Corporal Spears was killed in action in Ramadi, Iraq, while serving in the 3rd Battalion,

7th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division. Born June 30, 1984 in Pensacola, FL,

Spears was a lifelong resident of the Molino Community. He was active in sports,

including baseball and football, culminating as a starter on the offensive line at Tate

High School. Upon graduation from Tate in 2002, Spears briefly attended Pensacola

Junior College, making the Honor Roll. He achieved his goal of being accepted into the

United States Marine Corps in 2003. Stationed in Twenty-Nine Palms, CA, Corporal

Spears was a model infantryman. His Military Commendations include the Iraq

Campaign Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Medal, the National Defense Medal, a

Combat Action Ribbon, a Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, an Expert Rifleman Badge

and the Purple Heart.

Admission is free and open to the public.

A small reception will follow immediately after the remembrance ceremony.

Members of the Marine Corps League join together in camaraderie and fellowship for

the purpose of preserving the traditions and promoting the interests of the United States

Marine Corps. This is accomplished by banding together those who are now serving in

the United States Marine Corps and those who have been honorably discharged from

that service; voluntarily aiding and rendering assistance to all Marines and former

Marines and to their widows and orphans, and by perpetuating the history of the United

States Marine Corps through fitting acts to observe the anniversaries of historical

occasions of particular interest to Marines. The Marine Corps League is a Federally

Chartered Veterans Organization open to all honorably discharged veterans and is a

recognized tax-exempt organization under the IRS code section 501 c (4).

About the Military Order of the Purple Heart

The mission of the Military Order of the Purple Heart is to foster an

environment of goodwill and camaraderie among combat wounded veterans,

promote patriotism, support necessary legislative initiatives, and most

importantly, provide service to all veterans and their families. Our members

are Combat Wounded Veterans who are dedicated to our country and our

veteran community. We endeavor to do better for each other and by each

other always. Chartered by Congress for combat wounded Veterans. The

Order is composed of military men and women who received the Purple Heart

Medal for wounds suffered in combat or by an act of international terrorism.

Although our membership is restricted to the combat wounded, we support all

veterans and their families with a myriad of nation-wide programs by Chapters

and National Service Officers.
